As the drought continues to affect the Waikato, water levels for Lake Taupo have dropped to alarming levels and Taupo District Council is now asking people to watch their water use carefully.
Lake Taupo’s water level has reached Alert Level 3 of the Water Demand Management Plan, requiring the public to limit their own water use to handheld irrigation only, and only on odd and even days corresponding with their street address.
Taupo District Council Water and Waste Operations Manager Jeff Kivell says if lake levels continue to drop further Council will be required to put official water restrictions in place. “Current water usage and reservoir levels are actually normal, but it is the lake level that is of concern. We are hoping that we don’t have to stringently enforce water restrictions and are asking people to voluntarily limit their water usage for the time being, at least until we get some much needed rain.”
Mighty River Power lake level readings show that in a week’s time the lake is expected to hit minimum operating levels if the drought continues.
